About the Painting

My inspiration comes from the intrinsic possibilities of the materials I use, but is also deeply rooted in the local and natural environment. I am constantly drawn to the sea and the seashore and am fascinated by the ever-changing colours, shapes and textures in that rich environment. The fluidity and movement of underwater growth reflects the fluidity and movement of the paint with which I work.

Note: The frame in the photo is for demonstration purposes only, the frame provided will be choosen to best suit the painting (only if you choose this option).

My Process

The delicacy, but also the resilience of the silk fabric and the jewel-like colours of the paints offer tremendous and exciting opportunities. The silk is stretched and pinned onto a wooden frame. Specialised paint is applied which may result in strong, vibrant work, as well as soft subtle shades. I have followed all the rules to create defined, controlled images, but more often have broken the rules with abandon, to experiment and explore the many possibilities that the medium offers. Special effects can be created with the addition of salt and other substances. After a certain point, I have no control and the fabric and paint work together to continue the process to create the final result. It’s an exciting and sometimes frustrating medium, but one which I love!
