I am constantly drawn to the sea as inspiration for my paintings. For me,  mermaids symbolise the allure of the unknown and the deep connections between humans and the sea. They also embody sexuality and the feminine mystique. This painting captures the image of a mermaid rising from the deep on her journey to the surface of the water to catch a glimpse of land. A substance called Gutta was used to outline her body, create the details of the scales, and to draw the outline of the water weeds. In contrast, the background has colour applied freely and various techniques used to create the effects achieved.
